On Ventura’s Westside, many families face barriers of poverty, housing instability, and limited access to resources—especially among monolingual Spanish-speaking households. During the back-to-school season, these challenges intensify as parents try to meet the added expenses of even the most basic school essentials.Without proper supplies, shoes, or even a simple haircut, students often begin the school year feeling unprepared and out of place. These unmet needs can lead to lower self-esteem, disengagement from learning, and missed opportunities for academic and personal growth. The burden weighs not only on children but on entire families already carrying heavy loads.

The Solution

The Community Outreach Center steps in each year to lift this burden. On August 2nd, 2025, we will host our annual Westside Back to School Event, serving over 500 children from grades K–12.

Each child will receive:

• A new backpack

• Essential school supplies

• A pair of brand-new shoes

• A fresh haircut before the first day of school

Families will also connect with local resource providers, including after-school programs, educational services, and essential community support.

This is more than a distribution—it’s an environment of confidence, connection, and hope. It's a space where families are seen, supported, and equipped for the season ahead.

The Impact

When students show up on the first day of school fully equipped and feeling good about themselves, they are more likely to participate, engage, and thrive academically and socially. This event helps break the cycle of shame and empowers both children and their families with a sense of hope and belonging. Year after year, we see how a simple act of generosity opens the door to long-term transformation in the lives of Avenue families.
