Youth Mentorship Program
Building stronger communities by mentoring the youth of the Avenue for generation impact.
Our Mission
Many youth on Ventura’s West Side face significant challenges—trauma, poverty, family instability, substance abuse, sexual exploitation, violence, and depression. These difficult circumstances can make it hard for young people to see a brighter future. At the Community Outreach Center (COC), we believe that every young person has the potential for a promising future. We are committed to supporting these youth through mentorship, faith, and opportunities that empower them to transform their lives.
Why We Exist
The West Side of Ventura, like many underserved communities, is home to youth who are struggling to overcome obstacles that can lead them down paths of hardship. We recognize these young people not as victims of their circumstances but as individuals full of untapped potential. Through faith, resilience-building, and mentorship, we can help them unlock a future full of hope and possibility. By equipping youth with positive role models and purpose-driven programs, we aim to reduce the long-term adverse effects of their challenges and help build a healthier, more vibrant community.
What We Do
Our Youth Mentorship Program focuses on transforming the lives of Ventura’s youth aged 12-18. By pairing each youth with a trained, caring mentor, we provide them with the tools they need to succeed: resilience, emotional support, extracurricular engagement, and spiritual growth.
Our program is not just about providing guidance; it’s about helping these young people find their purpose, build confidence, and become the leaders of tomorrow. By investing in our youth today, we are paving the way for a brighter tomorrow.
Mentorship: One-on-one relationships with dedicated mentors to help build life skills, confidence, and resilience.
Emotional Support: Offering a safe, supportive space to help youth process and overcome emotional and mental health challenges.
Extracurricular Engagement: Connecting youth to local activities that build character, foster new skills, and encourage a sense of belonging.
Spiritual Formation: Helping youth grow in their relationship with Christ, exploring faith through prayer, Bible study, and spiritual discussions.
How It Works
The Youth Mentorship Program is designed to meet the unique needs of each participant. Our trained mentors provide individualized support in four key areas:
Goal-Oriented Coaching: Helping youth set realistic, achievable goals and break them into actionable steps.
Emotional Support: Providing a safe space for youth to express their feelings, struggles, and concerns.
Extracurricular Engagement: Encouraging youth to explore activities that foster growth, from sports to the arts, to broaden their horizons.
Spiritual Formation: Guiding youth in deepening their faith through connection with the local youth group and offering support in their spiritual journey.
All mentors undergo a comprehensive training program, including background checks and interviews, to ensure they are well-prepared to meet the specific needs of their mentees. Our mentor training focuses on:
Demographic comprehension and cultural sensitivity: Understanding the diverse backgrounds and challenges the youth face.
Goal-oriented coaching: Setting and achieving personal goals.
Emotional support and active listening: Providing empathy and validation, especially for youth who have experienced trauma.
Boundary setting and ethical conduct: Ensuring that mentors maintain healthy, professional relationships.
Extracurricular engagement: Helping mentees discover passions outside of academics, such as local sports and arts programs.
How You Can Get Involved
We are calling on community members, organizations, and leaders to partner with us in making this program a success. There are several ways to get involved:

This is an opportunity to invest in the future of our youth. Whether you're giving financially or donating materials, your support helps build a stronger community.
Spread the Word: Help us connect with potential mentors and youth who could benefit from this program. The more people know about the program, the greater the impact we can make.

List of Extracurricular Activities: If you know of local extracurricular opportunities for teens in Ventura, we’d love to hear from you.
Mentors: We are actively recruiting mentors who are passionate about making a difference in a young person’s life.
Training Curriculum Support: We're in the process of developing comprehensive mentor training materials and are looking for experts in youth development, mental health, and spiritual growth to help shape the curriculum.
